Hi, I'm Jared Council, and I'm the senior editor at the For(bes) The Culture.
My goal is to tell stories about some of the defining issues of our time, while also holding powerful people and organizations accountable for their actions—and inaction.
In this newsletter, sent every other Tuesday, you'll hear from me, Raquel "Rocky" Harris and other FTC members as we document business and culture trends of interest to Black and Brown communities, and help you follow and process this rather unique chapter of American history following the killing of George Floyd in May 2020.
As you'll see below, the FTC team produced some outstanding work in that vein in 2021, including its award-winning State of Black Entrepreneurship series, its FTC 50 Champions list and more. The foundation is solid. I look forward to helping build upon it, and I hope you'll follow along.
For(bes) The Culture set out to accurately define, rectify and create Black history. Our project, The State Of Black Entrepreneurship, is unveiling decades of overlooked Black business successes and introducing new data and multimedia storytelling to show where Black entrepreneurship stands today—and where it's headed.
The year 2021 produced news of record-breaking Black and Brown business startups and stories of exceptional Black business leaders and community builders who were paving new entrepreneurial pathways in 2021. And For(bes) the Culture was there to cover it all.
Chris Kempczinski's unearthed texts may prompt communities of color to question the company's sincerity about diversity, according to current and former franchisees, marketing experts and historians.
"You've got to realize that the world's a test, you can only do your best and let Him do the rest. You've got your life, and got your health. So quit procrastinating and push it yourself."
